Your federal retirement,
computed properly.
FERS, CSRS, BRS, TSP, Social Security, and VA benefits interact in ways generic retirement calculators ignore. ALAN’s planner runs the actual rules — annuity formulas, the FERS supplement, WEP/GPO and its repeal, survivor elections — and shows your income year by year from retirement to age 90. Free, at every tier.
What is the ALAN federal retirement planner?
A free planning tool for United States federal employees, service members, veterans, and survivors. It projects lifetime retirement income under FERS, CSRS, and the Blended Retirement System — combining annuity, TSP drawdown, Social Security (including the WEP/GPO repeal), VA disability, and survivor elections into one year-by-year projection.
What it computes
One chart stacks your FERS basic annuity, FERS supplement, Social Security, TSP drawdown, and VA disability against a target-spend line — so you see exactly which years run a surplus and which run short.
FERS, FERS-RAE, FERS-FRAE, CSRS, CSRS Offset, and FERS Special (law enforcement, firefighters, air traffic control) — plus the military Blended Retirement System with its 2.0%/2.5% multipliers and continuation pay.
Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset computed from your non-covered pension — with a toggle for the Social Security Fairness Act repeal (Public Law 118-273) and its retroactive adjustment.
Present-value comparison of claiming at 62, 67, or 70, with sensitivity to your life expectancy — plus a year-by-year bridge analysis for retiring before 62.
None, 25%, and 50% survivor annuity elections side by side: what each costs you now and what it leaves a spouse, over both lifetimes.
The five-year FEHB rule, checked against your coverage history, with the Medicare handoff mapped at 65.
Your G/F/C/S/I mix tracked alongside the income projection, so the drawdown assumption stays tied to what you actually hold.
Upload your SSA earnings-statement PDF and the planner reads your earnings record, credits, and benefit estimates directly — no retyping thirty years of wages.
VA combined disability ratings (with the bilateral factor), SBP/DIC interaction, and Survivor Benefit Plan elections modeled alongside the civilian systems.
Federal and military retirement rules are public law, and the people they apply to shouldn’t have to pay to see what the law already promises them. The full planner — every system, every toggle — is included in ALAN’s free tier with no card required. Paid tiers add portfolio tools around it; they never gate the planner itself.
Common questions
Is the federal and military retirement planner really free?
Yes. The planner is included in every ALAN tier, including the free plan — no card required. Federal civilian systems (FERS, FERS-RAE, FERS-FRAE, CSRS, CSRS Offset, FERS Special for LEO/FF/ATC), the military Blended Retirement System, and High-3 are all covered at no charge.
Does it handle the WEP/GPO repeal from the Social Security Fairness Act?
Yes. The planner computes Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset reductions and includes a toggle for the Social Security Fairness Act (Public Law 118-273, signed January 2025), which repealed both — including the retroactive adjustment, so you can compare your benefit under either regime.
What inputs does it need?
Birth year, high-3 average salary, years of service, retirement system, and TSP balance get you a projection. Optional inputs — survivor election, spouse benefit, VA disability rating, FEHB coverage years, earnings history — refine it. You can also upload your SSA earnings statement PDF and the planner reads it directly.
Does ALAN give investment advice or manage my TSP?
No. ALAN is a research and planning tool. The planner projects income under the rules you select; it does not place trades, move funds, or recommend specific investments. Projections are estimates based on current law and your inputs, not guarantees.
