Military Retirement: BRS vs. Legacy
Blended Retirement System, High-3, REDUX, and the 20-year cliff
An E-7 with 19 years and 11 months of active service who separates one month early walks away with zero pension. Not a reduced pension, not a partial pension — zero. The same E-7 who stays one more month to complete 20 years locks in a monthly check for life starting on the day of retirement.
That binary threshold — the 20-year cliff — has shaped military career decisions for generations. In 2018, the Department of Defense introduced the Blended Retirement System to soften that cliff, but it came with a trade: a lower pension multiplier. Understanding which system applies to which service member, and how the math changes between them, is where exam candidates either demonstrate mastery or reveal that they memorized a single formula and assumed it was universal.
There are four distinct military retirement systems, and a service member's DIEMS determines which one governs their pension.
That is the opening. Finishing a lesson is where it stops being interesting and starts being useful: the full lesson runs to 6 sections and ends with 5 practice questions. A free account is what opens the rest, and the other 255 lessons in the Academy with it. No card.
