I am Alex Romano, the founder of ALAN. I trained as an astronautical engineer: a bachelor's in aerospace engineering at USNA, then a master's in aeronautics and astronautics at Stanford as a Knight-Hennessy Scholar. My research was laser power beaming, moving energy with light, which taught me to distrust any number I could not trace back to an instrument. I bring the same habit to markets. Every figure in these letters cites the page it came from, and when the record does not support a claim, the letter says so.
Most market writing describes what already happened. I am after the thing everyone is looking at, and then the thing they are not: the transformer behind the GPU, the tanker count behind the inventory print, the deposit beta behind the bank rally. I read wide, from filings and central bank minutes to shipping data and the essays of people who think in decades, and I commit to a call with a horizon and a line that says what would make me wrong. Standing theses stay on the ledger until the market proves them or I reverse them in print. And yes, there will be one absurd analogy per letter. If a metaphor about a rice cooker explains monetary policy better than a paragraph does, the rice cooker wins.
